PROJECT 06

Eschaton

THE EXPERIMENT
To transition a live immersive workshop into a virtual immersive production in response to COVID-19, maintaining as many immersive components (audience agency, exploration, interaction, non-linear storytelling) as possible.

VIRAL VIRTUAL IMMERSIVE WORK

BROOKLYN, NY

THE BRIEF

RTB was hired to co-create and direct Chorus Productions’ Eschaton, originally conceived as a workshop for an immersive production with an eventual live home. Days before the workshop began the COVID-19 pandemic struck and we asked ourselves, what makes a production immersive? Is there a virtual format that audiences can access from home?

Abusing Zoom and web hosting platforms to the very limits of their potential made it possible for us to create a virtual building full of dozens of virtual rooms, navigable to audience members all over the world via embedded links, crafty web UX, and a healthy dose of game design. As the world hunkered down at home, Eschaton’s popularity skyrocketed as it became the longest running show of the pandemic.
